April 24,2013

April 24, 2013 is the last time I blogged and that was just a catch up blog. Every year I tell myself I am going to be a better blogger, I will blog each week. And every year I don’t *blogger fail*

I wish I was good with words, I am not. I wish I was “quippy” (you know snappy come backs and jokes off the top of my head) but I am not that either. What I am is shy, introverted (I work on that on a regular basis, after all being a business owner if I don’t put myself out there I won’t have a business) quiet and a thinker. If I am photographing you and I am not talking much its not because I don’t feel the session is going well its because I go in this photo mode and my mind is constantly thinking about lighting, angles, poses, that one blade of grass that needs to be moved…. you get the idea.  I sink into what I am doing and I choose to believe it is a good thing it just shows that this is my passion and my heart and I put all of that into each session.

On to a personal note… My baby (okay not literally baby but she is my youngest so she will always be my baby) turned 7 recently. I spur of the moment decided I needed to take photos, it had been cloudy and dreary and warm all day then the sun came out briefly so I grabbed her put her in a cute outfit, grabbed my awesome new to me chair and headed to a field. While taking these photos I came to the harsh realization that she isn’t a baby any more. She is growing into the most awesome girl ever. She loves church and gymnastics (recently moved to the competitive team) she is a little book worm just like her momma, she is giving, caring, cute and sassy, she has the most hilarious personality (I bet she grows up to be “quippy”). She is more than I had hoped my daughter would be and she is only 7.

Catch up

oh boy I am such a slacker when it comes to blogging.  Allow me to catch up with blogging random sessions and in no particular order.

First on the blogging block is little Mason.  I believe some people are put in your life for a reason and Mason’s Momma and Grandmomma were for sure.  They are awesome people and I am very happy to call them friends.  🙂  Mason was the best sleeper I have had yet.  He slept so long and so soundly I was able to get pretty much every shot we wanted.  There is something about capturing newborns that makes me sigh and feel so content and giddy at the same time.  I love when I do a newborn and they are signed up for my watch me grow package and I get to see them for at least the first year of their lives.  They become part of my family and there is nothing better.

Check out all my info and more of my work on my website and on facebook!

Senior Ambassador

I recently had a couple sessions with Taylor, she is a senior ambassador for me and we had so much fun.  She is beautiful and so sweet and made my day.  The second session was soooooo hot but she totally rocked it and the images turned out great if I do say so myself 🙂  If you know a 2013 senior who would like a chance at discounted senior session and a chance to earn free prints then send them my way and maybe they will be picked to be a senior ambassador.  Any way take a second and check these out 🙂

As usual you can see more of my work on my website or check me out on facebook.

Changes

I recently read a blog post by an awesome photographer whom I really look up to, Rachel Vanoven.  Her blog really inspired me to voice some of my thoughts on this matter.  While I am not near as busy as her nor do I host mentoring and workshops, I have some of the same concerns and problems she does.  In my busy times I feel as though I spend all my time behind the camera or in front of the computer screen.  In my not as busy times I am still in front of the computer a ton, working on website, learning new techniques, networking, and trying to find new props and accessories.  There are times when I miss my husband and kids so much even though they are under the same roof as I am.

Another  worry I have is, what if my clients think that I need to work on their images non stop until their gallery is posted, after all I work from home right, I am right there to get it done whats stopping me.  Now, I know that my clients aren’t that way because I have the best clients and they are so understanding, heck most of the time I end up becoming friends with my clients and that means the world to me.  That is me feeling I need to sit down and get all the images edited and the gallery posted and all the other work done before I can do anything else, not my clients making me feel that way.

While I still plan on working hard for my clients and putting my heart into each image, this is the year for priority changes, I am a wife and mother first and foremost and a photographer second.  I love my job more than any one has a right to, but I also need time with those I love.   This is the year I will not overbook myself so that I am running ragged and missing my kids childhoods (they are only this age once and I sure do not want to miss it)  In August, my son will start 5th grade and that is his last year of elementary school (and is already texting girls and rides his bike to friends house and “shoots hoops with his buddies” and I feel like I have no idea when that happened) and my daughter will start kindergarten.  They will both be in school all day for the first time in 10 years so my hours will be changing.  Starting in August, I will do sessions more during the day and only allow one maybe 2 evenings for sessions and I won’t be doing anything on Sundays except spending that precious time with my family and watching my children laugh and play (or bicker and fight as seems to be the case with these two) I will do office work during the day and stop at 3 when I pick my kids up from school. Life is too short and I do not want to take any of it for granted.  After all my daughter won’t want to twirl in a long flowing dress for too much longer and I don’t want to miss those moments any more.

Thank you Rachel for inspiring me to change how I do business so I do not miss my kids childhood.

Two in one day!

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing 2 newborns.  You met the first one in the last blog post and now its time to meet the second little guy.  I have photographed is 3 older siblings for a little over a year and now I get to include this little munchkin in my list of uber cute clients!!  This little newbie was 5 days new at the time of the session and it was the perfect age to do all the bending and posing, he was super pliant and we had so much fun!!  Newborn sessions always wear me out for the simple fact that I am crawling around on the floor for about 3 hours for each one, so you can imagine after 6 hrs crawling around and hovering over the babies I was sooooo tired and stiff.  But I am pretty sure it was TOTALLY worth it.  I know I say this a lot but, I DO HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD.

As usual you can check out all my info and more images on the full website, or you can check me out and “like” me on facebook, don’t forget to click that little like button while your visiting me there 🙂

Squishy

There are times when I love my job and then there are times when I LOOOOVVVEEEE my job.  Last Saturday was a LOOOOVVVEEEE my job day.  I got to spend the morning with an adorable 8 day new little boy.  He was so cute and squishy, had a head full of thick dark hair and he did a fabulous job letting me pose him.   Momma wanted some outdoor photos very badly and we lucked out that it was warm and sunny enough that we were able to sneak out for a few min and snap a couple shots for her without baby getting chilled.  Every time I do a newborn session I get the worst case of baby fever, but hey that’s a side effect I am willing to live with if i get to have these tiny babies in my studio for a few hours 🙂

As usual you can see all my work and information over on the good ole web page.  Also check me out on Facebook.

Where does time go?

This weekend I wanted to try some different techniques with indoor photos so I grabbed my 5 year old little girl and had her pose for me.  I changed her shirt, touched up the ends of her hair (it has some natural curl) and grabbed a new headband I got for girls.   I pulled out a  fabric back drop and my reflector.  When I have a session she usually is my light tester so she was a pro.  I was going for a straight face and she delivered.  Each time I do her photos she gets better and better and I can’t help but think how awesome she will be when its time to do senior photos (but of course I am NOT going to let her grow up)

I also got some new brushes for editing from Pretty Presets (love their presets and brushes) so I wanted to work with them too.  They are super easy and totally speed up my processing time per image!!

While processing these images I got tears in my eyes several times because it just put right in front of my face how fast my baby girl is growing up!!  She is more than I ever hoped she would be, she is giving, caring, compassionate, thoughtful and so many more things all at the lovely age of 5.  She is a great kid.

Any way here are the images I got of my girl this weekend.  As always you can view more work on my full website or on Facebook.

Contest

Okay so my referral contest is apparently not allowed to be hosted on facebook (there are all kinds of rules and regulations that are confusing as heck) and has to be hosted through a different page.  So here is the deal Lucille….

The purpose of this contest is to grow my potential client base so to be fair I will be checking to see if said person actually “liked” my page before the referral counts (those who have already liked and posted on the page will count towards your referral)  Have your friends and family like my FACEBOOK page  (<<<<<click that handy link over there)  and then post a comment on this blog or on the FACEBOOK  page  that you sent them.   At the end of the month who ever referred the most people will get a free session.  That session includes up to an hour of photo time either in the Mt. Carmel Il or Paducah Ky areas that is a $75.00 value!!!

So get to sharing this post so your friends and family can like my page and comment here and you can win a session 🙂

Facebook is in no way affiliated or responsible for this contest.

Growth

Last week I have the privilege of photographing a newbie!!  Her older brother was one of my first clients and it made me realize just how far I have come since then.  With every session I have I learn a little something to take to the next session.  I truly love what I do even if at times its frustrating and scary being a business owner.  Everything is up to me to do, design, education, promoting the business, the paperwork, the paperwork, the paperwork and not to mention the paperwork.  Sometimes I want to beat my head on the desk and cry but then I head out to a session and I get to snuggle a newbie, play with kids, or be involved with the glamour of a senior session and it is so clear why I do this.  It is truly what I was meant to do in life and I don’t feel right if I am not doing something photo related.

Here are a few of the newbie I had the pleasure to photograph last week.  You look at these and tell me if you think I have the greatest “job” in the world!!

As usual you can find more of my work and info on my full site.  Take a looksie around 🙂  You can also find and “like” me on facebook

I am trying, I really really am.

So last week I made the “resolution” to blog weekly because I knew daily wasn’t going to happen.  Here it is week 2 and I am having a hard time even doing weekly…. Don’t get me wrong, I have so many thoughts in my head and some of them are even pretty cool, if I do say so myself.  It is just hard for me get them out sounding as cool as they do in my head.

I will start with this thought.  Today I was trying to get all this boring office stuff done like data entry, typing up 2012 price lists, updating my portfolio galleries on my site, and finishing editing a session and I was totally distracted with the pretty sky.  So I said to myself “self, why don’t you take a pic with that fancy iphone camera you got there?” So I did and this is what I got….

Then I went out to get the mail and got distracted by these little red berries on this bush by the mail box.  So i said to myself “self, why not take a pic with that fancy iphone camera you got there” so I did and this is what I got..

Then when i got home from picking my daughter up from school I was hanging her bird feeder she made in school in the tree in the front yard and I got distracted by the buds in the trees, yes I said buds in the trees in JANUARY!!! I said to myself  “self, why don’t you take a pic of that with that there fancy iphone camera you got and your little macro lens you got for it?”  so I did and this is what I got…

So needless to say I have discovered iphoneography and am addicted.  I imagine there will be more blog posts to come featuring my photos from my iphone 🙂  I hope every one has a great rest of the week!!!
